On Tuesday the essential truth of the Blacksmith Bureau’s claims about Kate & Gerry McCann was confirmed in open court. We have never accused them of anything regarding their daughter but we said that from the start of this case they had been untruthful – not mistaken – in their statements to the police.

Nor was their incorrect version of events about a merely peripheral matter: it was concerned with what happened that evening, with who had seen the child, and when, before her disappearance – the most basic questions that have to be answered before an investigation can make any headway.
