The Rules Of The Road
A simple ditty for novices to keep in their heads regarding lights at sea.
If both lights you see ahead, Starboard your helm and show your red.
Green to green or red to red, all serene – go ahead.
But if to starboard red should appear,’tis your duty to keep clear.
Two Arguidos and daughter dead should sound alarm bells in your head.
No proof, forensics, one can’t but wonder, your support, no small blunder.
CEOP and Leicester Plod o’er law o’land, doing their best to ride roughshod.
Thought their cover up such a safe bet, never seemed to consider th’internet.
Standing ovation at NPIA, you couldn’t make it up I hear folk say.
Daughter dead and then they hid her, you’d think the cops their tells consider.
Cops and Quangos lavished support throughout, now they’re in there’s no way out.
For the moment might be said, they’ve got away with it, in spite daughter dead.
But that’s no message for me to send, I’ll guarantee it, we’ll get you in the end.
And when it all comes tumbling down with gnashing teeth and mournful frown.
Stood before justice though not alone, of company there’ll be plenty, countless others to atone.

As Summer Draws To a Close
As the Summer draws to a close, I'd like to thank . everyone who has helped with our Summer Campaign by using Madeleine luggage tags, displaying . posters, wearing Madeleine t-shirts while on their travels and of course for remaining vigilant. Thank you also to all the students who are helping with our 'Students for Madeleine' initiative. I have no doubt that it all helps. Keeping Madeleine's image out there greatly increases our chances of finding her. It is a reminder to people that she is still missing and to please keep looking for her. In addition, we know that somebody knows where Madeleine is. One more reminder of her may be all that it takes for them to finally come forward and let us know.
Despite the summertime being a relatively quiet period for everyone, our work to find Madeleine continues. There will be some changes and development in terms of strategy and ideas as we endeavour to leave no stone unturned in our search. This will include some changes to the board of Madeleine's Fund, simply to try and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of what we are doing. It has now been three years and four months since Madeleine was taken from us. None of us ever thought we'd still be in the position we are today. Inevitably there has to be change for a variety of reasons but importantly, this will also allow people to help and support us in different ways. Regardless of change, everyone's focus, commitment and desire continues to be that of finding Madeleine.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

"pissing into a dying man's oxygen mask"
Hopefully my previous explanation explained how I ended up here, and this is the last of the material that I gleaned from my stroll around the net.
I posted this caution in February this year. A time when the vultures were circling Raymond Hewlett like directors around a fund. As you can no doubt imagine, little heed was paid to these words of warning.
Unheeded without surprise then, but the degree with which the words were flaunted was simply quite staggering. That degree only became apparent when I fell upon these fine examples, all gathered in the one place, courtesy of Murdoch's Sun.
And this conspiratorial collection of crap, as I mentioned, all from a single web page.
Nice agenda Mr Murdoch, very nice indeed, a tad glaring perhaps, but still very nice.
Next up, short writings of others that I have featured previously, and re-posted here for a variety of reasons. Firstly, having a word or two to say about Hewlett, they are germane. Among other reasons, content and clarity, the previously mentioned and admired turn of phrase that falls with such seeming ease off the pen of John Blacksmith. For his style of writing, but more importantly, for an intrinsic brand of common sense, a brand beyond worth, Professor Moriarty.
I do wonder about one particular issue though, and this is a quite genuine question; given the benefit that hindsight bestows on us, would either author still write in the same vane when discussing the circumstances surrounding Goncalo Amaral. Amaral representing as he does, not only justice for Madeleine McCann, but Justice as a moral concept. Be that justice found within this tarnished and fetid Isle,or justice found in that equally tarnished and tainted land, Portugal.
I may or may not take the liberty as I go along, of highlighting a few of the more salient points by underlining them; there will of course be links of the usual nature throughout.
The quite unimportant and previously mentioned screenshots of Google links might find themselves employed as dividers, if for no other reason.
And before I leave you, and although I have asked the question before, albeit in not such a direct fashion, are the writings (on the 3As) of Professor Moriarty completely irretrievable and lost to us forever?
ProfMoriarty
For all his infelicities, Amaral is the the BIG problem for the McCanns.
All this guff about him and against him, right from the kicking off of the Cipriano Case as a kind of Proxy Madeleine case, has been designed - at least, their involvement - to discredit Amaral.
They don't give a flying fuck about the Cipriano Case or its victim. They'd much rather it was a more fragrant issue with a less blatantly obvious culprit but, hey, needs must.
The point is they NEED to disable Amaral big time. They NEED to discredit the policeman who oversaw the gathering of evidence which points right at their own two selves and NO ONE ELSE.
The proliferation of paedophiles simply mirrors the proliferation of sightings across Europe and is that ploy's 2009 (7) version. They imagine they can get a good summer out of the paedophile files, hopping from one to another as each one dissipates up their own jacksies.
Still they ARE getting closer to conceding Madeleine is 'most probably dead' and commissioning symphonies and anthems and public sculptures and choral works and Papal masses in her memory.
If ONLY they can screw Amaral to the wall.
As I've said before, and I know I do go on a bit, the fact he was a senior copper in charge of the Madeleine Case STILL caries weight with the general public. And, of course, it carry even more weight IF the general public actually got to see and read what Amaral thinks.
I do believe that if his documentary were shown in the UK, under whatever circumstances; or his book were available in English, here, that the McCanns would have received a serious, serious blow.
They know that too. Hence, they need to 'go abroad' and try to nobble him there before he reaches our shores so to speak.
But he WILL reach our shores. This IS 2009. He is here already, in fact, on this forum and in other places thanks to the internet.
It's just that final physical act of presence which is missing. The McCanns are trying to disable Amaral BEFORE that inevitable appearance of his views materialises.
This Cipriano affair may well have been their best shot. And it hasn't worked.
Blacksmith
But it's all froth, isn't it, the pros case? It is funny, as I've posted before, how the pro-case that was once apparently hard-edged realism, "look at the Prosecutors' report, look at the evidence, end of story" has completely reversed.
Now "it's look at the latest stunt" - Oprah Winfrey! pretendy coppers, pissing into a dying man's oxygen mask - and look at the baddy copper. A "baddy copper" is, of course, exactly the same showbiz TV cliche as a "mystery abductor", and all the other cheap products of the McCanns' stunted imaginations: history as stereotype. And somehow the pros have been drawn into it completely.
That's why not one of them is able to put out a reasoned case that takes into account the last two years anymore. Never any interpretation of the reconstruction refusal - which has become of even greater importance since the trashy Cutting Edge showed, inadvertently, how it couldn't be done! At the first attempt, on a propaganda programme, the recon stuff ended up mainly on the cutting room floor and in the residue that was shown they couldn't do it without cheating the witness testimonies, as we always suspected.
They never come out with a reasoned explanation for the holes that grow gradually wider in the McCanns' story - the shutters, the gale force wind in the apartment, the fibs in the parents' Authorised Version, constructed when they had no idea that the case papers would be released to refute them.
And will you see any posts here or elsewhere explaining exactly what evidence in the case could have been invented, or corrupted by one Hollywood bent cop?
Just asking the question is enough. The pros live on a diet of cliché, personal attacks on people like us - and gossip. Their tank is empty.
ProfMoriarty
Is it any wonder Amaral is driven to distraction by this case? or why the McCanns Etc are so desperate to nail him?
The Vile Paedo Theory presumes that all one has to do is 'find the paedo', because that's the only item missing.
Of course, we know that, long before you start 'finding the paedo', there's all the other missing bits - like WHY you think there was one in the first place, and HOW you believe one got into and out of the apartment with a living child once he does exist.
And this is the other end of the McCann ruse here - you must keep watching my left hand (R) waving (the Vile Paedophile), and don't pay any attention to the fact I don't have a fucking right hand at all.
Vile Paedo shifts everything right off the case. Then, it becomes a matter of hounding someone - they tried to fit up a man a few weeks ago, without actually naming him, after their trawl through the files and the mockumentary. But THAT ploy was rumbled, on here and other places, so they've shifted over to Hewlett as Mr Next Likely.
He's just This Week's Villain, the equivalent of Bum Of The Month.
But what it all does is move the attention to an evil person who has all the answers the McCanns refuse to give - why, when and how.
Find the Paedo, they cry, he's the one who will answer all those difficult questions. Not us.
Suddenly, then, it's a given that an abduction took place - and here's the paedo suspect to prove it ...
Of course, it's also high risk for them - it brings DEATH into the frame, where it wasn't welcome before.
But since they know the VPs are all fake, they know they won't have to deal with an actual real result of death. So they can have their fatal cake - with all the outrage and horror that attends paedophilia and child-killing - and eat it as well, because they know there will be no actual delivery of that horrible truth.
It's high stakes, yes. And deeply, profoundly, unspeakably immoral. This is the PR of Satan, really. Think about it.
Once again, they are all 'abusing', neglecting, manipulating and abandoning Madeleine.
Because there was NO abductor. There was no Vile Paedophile creeping around - not Hewlett, not his contradictories Bundleman or SpottyMan either.
There was NO abductor. There was NO evidence of abduction.
There was only her parents.
And while I'm at it, let's say this.
Insufficient evidence against her parents is so far removed even from insufficient evidence of an abduction as to be at the other end of the Universe.
Insufficient evidence of abduction is, in fact, yet another item of 'insufficient' evidence against the parents.
Because not only can they not clear themselves beyond doubt. They also cannot prove that anything took place which automatically excludes them from participation.
You'd expect proof of abduction to be a given. Well it ain't.
I have to call a halt to it here, it's late enough and I still have things to do. I'm orf to Ireland tomorrow for a week.
Peace.
Blacksmith
Look, I don’t want to sound like I’m making a rallying cry but can I repeat, the conviction of Dr Amaral – whom I still support without reservation – makes no difference to the eventual resolution of the McCann affair.
We all have different ideas of what a “resolution” to this case would mean. To some, it would be lengthy imprisonment for the McCanns; to others their public humiliation; to yet others, myself included, relief that deception – of us - had failed, without necessarily any punishment of the couple at all.
Earlier today I posted about the pro-McCann people elsewhere who, with just as much sincerity as we possess, hope and believe that the dying man will turn out to be the abductor.
I added, without reservation, that the man will be exonerated and invited all pros, once this prediction is found to be correct, to ask themselves why. Guesswork?
The point I was making was not that I am a smartass who knows something but this: the theory of the case to which I subscribe – essentially the theory of Dr Amaral’s colleagues and himself – is that the child died in the apartment. If that theory is correct then it predicts that no abductor can ever turn up.
In this case we will see fairly rapidly that, once again, the theory will give an accurate prediction – as it has done for the last eighteen months - while the beliefs of others, who accept the McCanns’ version of events, that this man may be the abductor, will be shown to be completely without foundation. And every time a theory predicts an outcome correctly, the likelihood that it is true is further strengthened.
Nothing can alter this reality, which is being confirmed while the ex-suspects’ claims grow wilder and wilder. Do not be fooled by the noise which the media makes, even when that noise inevitably induces doubts and a feeling of isolation. On Google today there were 439 stories indexed giving credence to the Team McCann fairy tale about Hewlett: all 439 will be shown to be wrong fairly quickly.
Dr Amaral’s temporary difficulties make no difference to the grievously slow but inexorable emergence of the truth about what happened.
Prof Moriarty
It won't surprise anyone that I'm not buying in to any of that 'the McCanns are winning the PR war' crap.
The McCanns have been 'winning the PR war', such as it is, since Day One. Apparently.
That's what I've been told.
I've seen, what?, three documentaries aired from completely their perspective, one actually funded, scripted by and starring 'As Themselves - The McCanns'.
I've seen a whole string of pukes writing in the daily and weekend papers, from India Knight to Allison Pearson to that gormless wank Parsons and God knows how many arseholes in between, from Fiona Phliips to that blubby Scots git off breakfast TV, and I haven't seen a single page which could be termed purely 'anti-McCann', in spite of their many protestations that they are being hounded, hated and victimised.
I've seen a few articles merely questioning some key areas of their viewpoint - nothing more severe than that.
And what does all that matter? Absolutely fuck all.
Oprah? Absolutely fuck all.
You see, every time the McCanns go to air at all now, it's not to 'find Madeleine', it's to clear their name.
It's not the internet which is hounding the McCanns. It's the McCanns themselves. And this isn't some arcane, moral victory I'm talking about. This is the very real outworkings of poisoned minds, poisoned consciences. They have no choice but to go over and over and over again the very areas of dispute in their testimony, endlessly rehearsing the same faulty statements, making small adjustments, squeezing this in and that out ... over and over again.
The huge PR machine they have activated in their defence is endlessly manufacturing wheezes to convince someone, probably themselves, of their innocence.
It is simply not working on people who didn't buy it first time around. The people who DID buy it found that it was quite expensive; and by this stage they would eat shite with a knife and fork if it were served to them.
As for the rest? It's a matter of complete indifference. And that's the vast majority of the public.
For what it's worth, I don't believe Amaral's view on the case has been damaged in the slightest. Not in the slightest.
What will happen is that, sooner rather than later, Amaral's views will become public knowledge in Britain and that's the real poison as far as they are concerned. Because THAT is what will finish them.
The Mitchell world-view is one where PR actually substitutes for reality. Problem is, it doesn't.
Buried far below the Mitchell bullshit is the corpse of Madeleine McCann and the stink of it on her mother's clothes.
That isn't going away. And no one should be under the illusion that the police anywhere have 'parked' the McCann investigation.
The McCanns were involved in their daughter's disappearance. That is the settled opinion of the police. And it will come to the fore. When it does, as it will, strap yourselves in for a catastrophe for British public opinion that will make the expenses scandal look like lollipop-stealing.
So, I'm not swayed by the Sun or the Express or even the Mail, God Bless It, in tis little paragraphs on the McCanns. I've seen them round on bigger fish than the McCanns and eat them alive.
And no one in those papers believes a single fucking word of what the McCanns say in those stories.
Moreover, as long as there is the internet, the McCanns - and the papers - do not control opinion. Remember, it was a forum like this which actually blew the lid on the breaking news from Portugal when it seemed the McCanns would walk away without anyone in Britain even knowing they were under suspicion. The papers tried to block that news. They failed to report it for two months, until finally forced to by the power of posters on the MF.
Fuck Mitchell. Fuck the press. Fuck the McCanns too, for that matter.
The only one I've ever cared about here was the victim. And by any stretch of the imagination THAT has never been any of that lot.

The Lesson For Today: Cant and Hypocrisy
It's not unusual when a visitor arrives at the blog via a Google search, for me to retrace that visitor path back to source. It's nothing other than keeping a finger on the pulse of things, the world view as it were, albeit a Google world view.
I followed one such path this afternoon and went on the proverbial mystery tour. I took a few screen shots along the way, shots far from earth shattering, but nonetheless, shots, that for one reason or another attracted my attention. Those screen shots now destined for yet another post.
I also opened a few of the Google links and among the places I ended up were, Good Quality Wristbands and The Sun, Murdoch's Sun.* Now there's a piece of work if ever there was; how it reminds me so of Fox News US. Both these ministries pandering to the similar demographics, their content aimed at similar fat arsed cretins, in the hope no doubt of achieving similar effect in its readership, no matter which side of the pond they dwell
There is however a slight difference, and for that we must be grateful. We are in the UK spared having everything coated in a sickly layer of Jesus Christ Almighty, something for which Americans have a seemingly unending appetite. Stuffing as they do, Jesus; with the same nauseating excess as their junk food, down their insatiable gobs. Still not terribly surprising is it? not with God being an American n'all, how else could there be one Nation under God.
Why am I off on this tangent? well I'll tell you, it's Sunday, I feel like it and I'm pissed. Pissed at the same cretinous fat arsed American Jezoids who wallow in ignorance like this below. *This, being a testament to ignorance and stupidity for which there is no metric, no scale, in fact it's so far off the scale its in fucking orbit. An orbit no doubt treading a similar path, not unlike Russell's Celestial Teapot. (Speaking of teapots and totally off topic, try this for size. The Apostate and the giant teapot)* Now at the bottom of the page.
Though I let it pass at the time, on the basis that I really couldn't be arsed replying to yet another cretin, the comment I received went on to be a stimulus. That comment plus yesterdays bit of found treasure combined, results in my writing today. And perhaps to be fair I should include a bit of Bill Bryson that I happen to be reading at the moment.* He being able to see things a whole lot clearer than the majority of his countrymen, I will just put it down to the twenty years he spent in civilisation. A mostly secular civilisation at that.
*Notes From a Big Country
Death From Above.
I had already received two comments in a similar vane, arrogance, for an article I had featured in 2007. A level of arrogance I might add, that seems to be almost exclusive to the citizens of the one nation under God.
So what was it about this last comment that made it so much different? nothing really, other than it was a bit more rounded, nearly the complete picture, and in so few words. The only thing missing in fact was that the Wrath of God hadn't been called upon to strike me dead for my blasphemy. Blasphemy against the Greatest Nation on Earth that is, not God.
I shall post the same offending intro here as I did then, with of course our featured comments.
Death From Above
In reality, "Death from Above" means nothing less than mass murder from 15,000 feet. It means daisy cutters, bunker busters, cruise missiles, napalm, and white phosphorous. It means depleted uranium and cluster bombs littering the landscape for decades. It means rubble, destruction, the ruination of lives by the hundreds, by the thousands and more. It means Dresden, Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. It means "shock and awe." It means 9/11. It means more than space allows me to explain, yet it's perfectly normal for an American to slap a "Death by Above" decal on his/her vehicle...right next to "support the troops" sticker. link
I shall not mention the grammar.
Anonymous 1
well the saying "death from above" is use to discribe the us paratrooper because we jump out of planes not freakin bombs and if it wasnt for soldiers enlisting then you wouldnt even be able to write this dumbass message
Such delightful arrogance, and a non-sequitur for luck.
Anonymous 2Ah yes; bugger orf back to where you came from.
Airborne -All the Way - defending your right to be an A-hole.
...and if you don't like being an American there are plenty of other countries to choose from.
And then we have the icing on the cake. How he manages to cover so much in so few words is truly beyond me.
Anonymous 3
I stumbled upon this site looking for my death from above "Airborne" decal to put on my American made truck and I about puked when I read what the author had to say. Your the fag that drives a prius right...and never worked a day in your life in service of your country or anyone else for that matter. Keep cryin about the freedom my brothers preserve for you.....whata selfish P.O.S.
He doesn't help himself does he? In fact he sounds very much like the guy that once hailed Bill O'Reilly as, and I kid you not, a Great American.
Staying with death from above, Jesus and the Rapture I am afraid, will have to slide down the page a tad. Let us take a little look then at the organisation charged with that mission, the United States Air Force.
Never in all the annals of history has there been an institution quite like this one. Going so far as to say, an institution so wrapped in its own piety, so steeped in abject hypocrisy, and so murderous in intent, that by comparison the USAF makes the Catholic Church look positively enlightened. A shining star no less, a beacon for knowledge and understanding and I shall even throw for taste a hint of tolerance. Such is the reality and not just my opinion alone of the United States Air Force.
Earlier I stood accused of having: never worked a day in your life in service of your country.
How very right he is, not a day, not one day have I spent in the service of my country. Not one day flying half way around the world to drop by their millions of tons, indiscriminate bombs on the soft and vulnerable flesh of men women and children. Not a day spent on burning to death those that the bombs had missed by raining down upon those same vulnerable people, the horror of Napalm.
Not a day spent poisoning the country, the very earth that these gentle people had trod and had called their home for millennia. Not a day then spent in dropping just one ounce of the nineteen million gallons of dioxin that were on a shit-ass little country. The legacy of which resulting in the untold horrors of children being born with some of the most hideous deformities ever witnessed.
Not a day for me being a true American Patriot, no My Lia for me to remember, no days spent in the service of my country.
A legacy to last for generations not yet born, but a legacy that pales by comparison to the one that has been gifted to Iraq. A legacy of poisoned land, of similar * horrific birth defects as those visited on the Vietnamese, but a legacy that will last millennia, such is the legacy of Depleted Uranium. A legacy courtesy of that same One Christian Nation Under God, the sanctimonious and hypocritical United States of America and its equally sanctimonious and hypocritical Air Force. *Big site keep scrolling.
Lord bless this defender of freedom, the American psyche in a nutshell.
And if you think that one is a vomit in the making, wait until you've had six and a half minutes of much watch, United States Air Force Academy Campus Crusade for Christ. This below lifted from an earlier post.
USAF: A Most Ungodly Organisation
United States Air Force Academy Campus Crusade for Christ.
Six and a half minutes of film that epitomises everything that is wrong with religion, everything that is wrong with America, and consequently, everything that is wrong with religious America.
What could be more ungodly than an organisation that by virtue of it's very existence, its purpose being to reign death and destruction on people in their thousands, if not, as in the case of South East Asia, by the millions.
And finally we get to the culprit in all this, Jesus H and the Rapture.
I've said much today so I shall save you chapter and verse on this little display of cor bleedin' blimey!
Other than to say, and to say it is not at all unique, that most things that issue from the mouths of them that's got God, (of any stripe) if it didn't have a religious tag on it, the speaker would be a worthy candidate for the nut house. These fellows just take it one step further, their requirements being much the same as the other fellows, but accompanied by a straight jacket.
Only in Ameriki folks, only in Ameriki.
For those of you that came in search of what must have seemed like a phantom post, this one:

John Blacksmith: Clarence Mitchell is Different:
Though the header: Clarence Mitchell is Different might not seem, given the many other interesting choices on offer, the most scintillating pick of the crop, it is however not without a certain touch of savoir vivre.
John Blacksmith offers us a wide and interesting choice of delightful phrases in his latest offering: Entertaining Mr Mitchell. A wide and interesting choice indeed. Though a tad longer and a touch more descriptive, this for instance:
.......to drive away the memory of the McCann voice, that sneering whine with its toxic mix of aggression, spurious justification and self pity, so reminiscent of the petty criminals who daily traipse through the district courts of his native Glasgow.
Now that's not bad in anybody's book, not bad at all, not at all at all it ain't. Ironically, or should that be coincidently, whichever, another phrase of the inimitable Mr Blacksmith, I had earmarked as the title for another article, featuring not just himself, but the equally inimitable and talented, Professor Moriarty. Of that, a little later in the day.
I say the inimitable Mr Blacksmith but.... but does that become a misnomer when we consider what John blacksmith and I appear share in equal amounts? They being of course, equal and abundant amounts of revulsion, loathing and not least contempt, that we hold for the repulsive Clarence Mitchell. So much so in fact that it would be much akin to looking in the mirror, cracked or otherwise, and seeing the other fellow staring back.
Have at it then and savour the admirable writing and meritorious phraseology.
But just give me minute to find a piccy or two.....
Like the header, you may think this a strange choice, but for much the same reasons, it rates as one of my, top five ever.
Entertaining Mr MitchellAnyone new to the McCann case – the Bureau’s target audience - must be slightly puzzled by the opprobrium that our friend the Coffin, AKA Clarence Mitchell, seems to attract. Just what is it about him? Why, in particular, do critics of the saintly parents’ Authorized Version of events criticise and abuse him more than almost anyone else involved in the case?
Birds of a feather?
Even that grim whiner Gerry McCann hardly attracts the verbal flak that bursts around Mitchell every time his absurd, Muppet-like features, augmented recently by what appears to be a cheap synthetic wig, appear on the screen. Partly that is because McCann is so genuinely repulsive that one just wants to leave the room, shaking one’s head, or scrabble among the cushions for the remote control: anything, anything, perhaps even Simon Cowell, God forbid, to drive away the memory of the McCann voice, that sneering whine with its toxic mix of aggression, spurious justification and self pity, so reminiscent of the petty criminals who daily traipse through the district courts of his native Glasgow.
The quote came from an article in the Indi, an article you might better remember for these words of modesty: I am a decent, caring human being. If I can help them, I will." Blah blah
Mitchell isn’t repulsive in this I-need-a-shower- after-watching-him sense; instead one wants to hurl ripe tomatoes at the screen while shouting you can’t believe this shit, you imbecile, you just can’t! before falling into stunned silence and then vain fantasies - that the Goatherd Edgar, for instance, will suddenly snap, leap from his chair and hurl himself upon his team mate, seizing his puffy neck with both those giant stranglers’ hands.
Voice from the pit
Mitchell inflames people, we think, both because of what he is - his manifestly odious personality - and, more important, the related matter of what he does. Of all the actors in this drama Mitchell is the one with the fewest excuses, the one who, above all others, chose to involve himself in the affair – and people sense it.
The prime movers, the McCanns and the Tapas 7, all - according to the Portuguese police - found themselves at the centre of a nightmare that was not originally of their own choosing. The family clans who sprang to their defence with their instinctive underclass distrust of the police were sucked in by their children. Others, like Amaral, had to descend into this cess pit due to the demands of their professions; still others, like the hapless, stumbling Gordon Brown walked into it because of their lack of political nous.
Clarence Mitchell is different: he sought out the opportunities offered by the shit-filled tank and chose to enter it up to his neck, finding, perhaps for the first time in his life, a place where he was comfortable and fitted in. Unlike the others he had almost nothing to lose, not even financially, as we shall see, and the inevitable consequence of his immersal, the stench he emits, is one he seems quite able to live with: people may abuse him or back off, holding their noses, but that, apparently, doesn’t trouble Clarence: somehow he seems used to it. more The Blacksmith Bureau

Be Careful What You Wish For

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
In much the same way as the 'Tommies' of 1914-18 turned to their copies of The Wipers Times for relief from the grim absurdity of their trench-bound circumstance, we in our intermittent moments of gloom have our own paper-based comforters. It must have been a comfort to the McCanns when John Bull's various rags adopted their conclusion that Madeleine had been skilfully extracted from the family's holiday apartment by agents of paedophilia. If the unbiased opinion of academics followed suit then it had to be right, didn’t it?
On behalf of the Telegraph, Caroline Gammell in Portimao and Nick Allen in Amsterdam, announced in August of 2008:
Madeleine McCann 'snatched by international paedophile ring'
'British police believe Madeleine McCann was snatched by an international paedophile ring after she was photographed three days before she vanished, files have disclosed.
'The concern was raised in an email sent by the Metropolitan Police's intelligence unit dealing with Clubs and Vice, CO14 on March 4 this year.
'It said: "Intelligence suggests that a paedophile ring in Belgium made an order for a young girl three days before Madeleine McCann was taken.
'"Somebody connected to this group saw Maddie, took a photograph of her and sent it to Belgium. The purchaser agreed that the girl was suitable and Maddie was taken."
'The astonishing revelation supports Kate and Gerry McCann's theory that their eldest child may have been taken by a child smuggling ring.
'Written by a police officer called John Shord, it was sent to DC John Hughes at Leicestershire Police and passed on to Portuguese detectives.'
Well, the story seems to have been something of a 'slow burner', but Mademoiselles Smith and Lazzeri each remained convinced nearly a year later, both publishing in May 2009, with Lazzeri turning to none other than a top criminologist, Professor David Canter, in support of her own faith in the McCann postulate.

'The more I hear about the Algarve, the sicker I feel. Investigators hunting for Madeleine McCann say the area is awash with paedophiles, with seven sex attacks on kids in the last 4 years.
'Perhaps that's why those thicko cops pointed the finger at the McCanns - by blaming them and moving on, nobody would dig up their dirt. They continue to ignore new evidence and hope what they always hoped - that this case would just go away.'
If Maddie is alive she may not answer to that name or remember who she was - The Sun

Britain's top criminologist Professor David Canter….
'After studying the case closely, Prof Canter, director of The Centre for Investigative Psychology at the University of Liverpool, concluded Maddie was taken by a gang of traffickers.
'She had been left in the family holiday apartment with her twin brother and sister Sean and Amelie while her parents went to dinner with friends.
'The professor said: "Child traffickers are very quick at hiding a child's identity. In one case they managed to drug a girl, dye her hair and dress her as a boy within an hour of taking her.
"She was quickly found in the arms of an abductor but her parents barely recognised her.
"I believe Maddie was skilfully targeted. It is very unlikely that someone would break into the apartment on the off-chance.
"I don't believe it was a lone paedophile. They're very unlikely to carry out a crime like this.
"Child trafficking is a growing, very profitable industry. There is a good chance Maddie is alive."
Eventually then, a degree of credibility is bestowed upon the McCann view. But is it a starred first, garnered through diligent research, or a hasty third scribbled after 'last orders' at the local?
Representatives of diverse religious communities have, as we know, spoken out recently in opposition to certain views expressed by Professor Richard Dawkins. It is a moot point as to whether they fear the wrath of their Gods more than the prospect of redundancy, but here is one of Dawkins' sage (and televised) comments concerning 'evidence':
"We must favour verifiable evidence over private feeling. Otherwise we leave ourselves vulnerable to those who would obscure the truth."
Dawkins' concern for the primacy of evidential argument is widely shared. One discovers, deep in vaults of the internet, such comments as the following:
"The Casa Pia court ruling has given fresh venom for all those primarily concerned with their disgust at Madeleine's parents. With no evidence to support their hatred, they are blind with rage and remain a fixated darker side to the internet that can only be usurped by the criminal activities of the paedophiles they willingly defend in preference to admitting to themselves that they are wholly wrong." (Dr Stein's Chaosraptors.com)
Venomous hatred is surely an emotional state of mind, hardly governed by 'evidence.' Unlike the author here I would rather only speak for myself, but my primary concern is not with my own disgust, however manifest. If it were I'd be in serious need of a 'shrink'. Nor does any failure on my part to admit that I am in error as regards my understanding of the McCann case, or anything else, imply that I am a willing defender of paedophiles. Like so many others, I am simply reluctant to accept an explanation of events for which there is no evidence, especially when there is evidence to support an alternative interpretation.
Anyway, so long as we're all agreed that evidence is paramount, let us turn now to the Sunday Express story of September 5.
Paedophile ring with link to Madeleine McCann jailed
By James Murray
"One of the abused boys, Pedro Namora, is now a lawyer and was a key witness in the case.
"He wants Portuguese detectives to continue their probe as he believes the ring may be connected to the disappearance of Madeleine at the Praia da Luz resort on the Algarve in May 2007."
In Dr Stein's opinion:
"This recent criminal convictions (sic) in Portugal opens up the question as to how endemic child abuse rings actually are, not just in Portugal but in other countries as well. The parents of missing British child Madeleine McCann will take little comfort in learning that such prominent figures have been involved with child abuse. In a somewhat guarded comment, Clarence Mitchell, the McCann's official spokesman said that they had been following this case but had found no link to Madeleine's disappearance and a paedophile gang."
Well, well, well.
So there are sophisticated paedophile networks operating in Portugal after all. It wasn't just a figment of the McCanns' imagination. How could they have guessed?
There is a hint here of the McCanns having pinned their theoretical prospects on something in the ether, which, now that it has been publicly distilled, has suddenly become a politically dangerous association, and one from which they are better off 'distanced'. Retreat brings with it its own problems however.
There is apparently no evidence of any link between the Casa Pia investigation, Madeleine's disappearance and a paedophile gang. Clarence says so. It must be true. But James Murray's 'header' clearly refers to the accused in the Case Pia case as having a link to Madeleine McCann (is that libellous?). Unless we've all been seriously misinformed, those prosecuted in Portugal were not simply 'linked' with a paedophile ring, they formed one. So the Mitchell claim here that there is nothing to link the Casa Pia case with a paedophile gang is nonsense. But is that part of what he said? Not really. Mitchell's remark appears to imply that there is no connection between the child molesters of Casa Pia notoriety with 'the gang', (i.e. another gang) that took Madeleine.
Are we here contemplating a paedophile analog of the mafia, with several 'families' in contention for the available business, or territories of abuse, defined like the protected 'trading patches' in the vicinity of football stadia known to have provoked 'hot dog wars' in the past? It all seems a bit extreme somehow, inclining to the rife end of the endemic spectrum. And yet... these are the words of a commentator after all - a paraphrase of some remark or other made by Clarence Mitchell, which could just as easily have taken the form employed by a genuine journalist, James Murray, in his on-line version of events published Sept. 5:
"Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, said they had been closely following the Casa Pia case but did not have a lead linking Madeleine's disappearance to the paedophile ring."
On this view there is only one ring - the ring. And Madeleine's disappearance is not connected with it.
Since we know from the testimony of an acknowledged expert in his field that Madeleine would not have been taken by a 'lone wolf', the most reasonable conclusion to be drawn, based on the available evidence, is that Madeleine was not abducted by or on behalf of any paedophile whatsoever.
Which brings us necessarily to the question of motive. If someone abducts a child it is for a reason, and the case of missing Madeleine is unquestionably one of abduction, by definition (O.E.D: abduction, n. Illegal carrying off, esp. of a child, ward;). There can be no doubt in anyone's mind that Madeleine McCann, alive or dead, was illegally carried off. And now that we may dispense with the paedophile hypothesis as an obscuration of the truth, we can justifiably contemplate some alternative explanation(s) as to why, even at the risk of igniting venomous hatred.
