Shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt's appeal for more Conservatives to be employed by BBC News could be about to be granted – except in reverse. Clarence Mitchell, the former BBC journalist turned spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann, is planning to stand as a Tory MP in the next general election. Mitchell, who quit the corporation to head up the media monitoring unit at the government's Central Office of Information, will face a selection board early next month. He already knows the party's director of communications, Andy Coulson, rather well – from Coulson's time as editor of the News of the World.

According to the same source, Clarence Mitchell maintains an amicable relationship with Madeleine McCann's parents, but he is no longer as available to participate in the McCanns' actions. He was conspicuously absent from the media machine covering Kate and Gerry McCann's presence in Lisbon, forcing Claudia Nogueira, Public Relations officer for Lift Consulting - the Portuguese company supporting the couple's campaign - to increase contact and information-sharing with the journalists attending the court (patiently available, she took care to speak to all the journalists one by one). She incidentally denied that her British counterpart was opposed to Madeleine's parents' journey. more
In June 2008 I wrote this concerning Clarence Mitchell.
Clarence Mitchell, hear me this twenty fourth day of June.
As this sordid case moves inevitably towards the only conclusion that can be, you will not for shame, not for shame and not for the tiniest scrap of dignity will you offer up the excuse for your actions that you were deceived.
No you will not do that, you have aligned yourself with two people that are about to become the most reviled and most infamous couple in the history of this country and many more a place I am sure.
Kate and Gerry McCann are names that will be forever associated with every foul adjective that exists in the English language and every other language that is spoken on this planet.
And there shall be one other name that will be forever associated with this vile pair, that name will be yours Clarence Mitchell, you know this and soon the world will know this.
You have made your bed Mister Mitchell, you shall lie in it.
You will not for shame tell the world you were deceived.

I have had about as much as I can take this last twenty four hours watching this creature spew his lies and bullshit.
The only thing that has saved me needing a new monitor is the fact that when this obscenity is over the self same video clips that I have had to endure as this whore vomits his disgusting bile is that they will be there for posterity and will be an non-erasable testament to the antics of this piece of shit.
There is a dead child in all this that seems to have been forgotten.
I cannot help but feel some things have died in this country since this shabby affair began, this shabby affair championed by Clarence Mitchell, complete with his lies, spin and obfuscation.
Such things as decency, integrity and just plain old fashioned basic morality, these things are casualties, casualties that can be directly attributed to Clarence Mitchell.
This country of ours, of yours and mine, has, on the world stage, been sullied and shamed and justifiably ridiculed, in turn leaving me as a citizen feeling equally shamed and tarnished.
Sitting far from well with me this feeling of shame, and for a moment ignoring the fundamental reason why we do what we do, seeking justice for Madeleine McCann, this feeling of shame is sufficient for me to say that I will do everything in my power to ensure Clarence Mitchell never takes a seat in the house of commons. This I promise.
And to those of you that feel as I do and are familiar with this case, I appeal to you to send me every example of Mitchell's lies that you can.
